CHAPTER 14
HARRISON
âNo. No way. Forget about it.â
Maggie shook her head, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. We were on one end of Carrick-a-Rede, the famous rope bridge in Northern Ireland, and every attempt to get her to cross it with me had proven useless.
âI told you I donât like heights, and walking on a teetering bridge twenty-five meters over a chasm is definitely something I donât intend to do. Youâre the daredevilâgo ahead and cross it. Iâll be here, watching you. Iâll even take pictures.â
I laughed. She was going to cross that bridge with me if it was the last thing she did.
I reached over and uncrossed her arms, grabbing her hands. âYouâll be fine. Look, there are kids crossing it with their parents. They wouldnât let people walk on it if it wasnât safe.â
âThe Titanic was supposed to be safe too.â She struggled to free her hands and I squeezed them tighter, chuckling. Weâd visited the museum of the Titanic while in Belfast and sheâd kept saying how unbelievable it was that such a majestic ship had snapped into two pieces like a KitKat bar. It was funny she would now compare it to a simple bridge. I liked that overly cautious side of her. It made me laugh, and had the potential to balance my recklessness if we ever became a couple. I blinked. No. Thatâs not likely to happen, McNally. Get back on track; youâre just friends.
âJust think what an amazing story youâll be able to share with your family and friends when you go home! And Iâll be right behind you, donât worry.â
âNo. Just no.â
I pulled her to me. âCome on, Maggie. Itâs going to be fun!â
And then everything changed. She looked up behind my shoulder, and suddenly she squeezed my hands tightly and tears glistened in her eyes. I turned around and saw it: a faint rainbow across the sky, ending in the water below the cliff. My mouth dropped open. When sheâd explained the reason behind the rainbow, Iâd thought it might have been just a series of coincidences, just like all the times Iâd convinced myself my mom was with me or I thought I could feel her presence. But now⦠Was it just another coincidence, or could this belief about her brother be real?
âLetâs do this,â she said, pulling me toward the bridge with a determined stride. I smiled. I didnât care if it was a coincidence or a sign from her brotherâit had changed her mind, and that was all that mattered.
The bright smile on her face and her squeals of delight once we reached the other side made me want to freeze that moment in time. I couldnât understand how sheâd gotten under my skin in a way nobody ever had, and so fast it almost made me feel dizzy, but I couldnât deny it, either. The ticking clock in my subconscious that brought me closer to the moment Iâd have to say goodbye was getting louder, my heart sinking further with every moment that passed.
